The Storyteller: Galahs on the gum tree

GALAHS SMALL _D8H6280

CHARACTERS OF THE OPEN PLAINS

We have several Galahs visiting our garden and surrounding open land. The antics they get up to when relating to one another is often humorous and appears to be playful. But they also squabble and peck at one another in order to protect their space on a branch or to be near a mate- or so it seems.  While they are also known in WA as Pink and Greys, their colouring does vary with soft pinks through to deep or strong pink- particularly around the face- but not always. There is also often a dusky grey “wash” over the feathers on the abdomen. And even under the wings, there are some grey feathers tinged with pink.

This painting was designed to illustrate that fun behaviour of Galahs and while setting out the sketches it came to me that one bird was perched as if telling a story to the others. Thus the title of the painting.

Honkey Nut Heaven- Red-capped Parrots on a Pink Flowering Marri

Red-capped Parrots small _D8H6245

THE QUIET PARROTS OF THE WEST

With colours to challenge a harlequin clown, the brilliant Red-capped Parrots are surprisingly not so easily found in a tree. In parts of the south-west corner of Western Australia, they are moderately common birds. Large flowering grevillea shrubs in gardens and Marri trees laden with the bell shaped fruit known locally as “Honkey Nuts  are where they are most frequently observed feeding. The female is similar to the male but has duller colouration. Either bird can vary in size from 32cm to 39cm long- which is quite a remarkable difference in length. Red-capped Parrots are endemic to the South-west corner of Western Australia.

Reflections in the Afternoon

Bronzewing Pigeons resting in the early afternoon

Watercolour painting on Arches 300GSM Hot Press Paper.

Our property consists of natural vegetation including Marri and Jarrah trees with a planted garden designed to attract birds. There are locations in the garden where Bronzewings tend to gather including a resting area underneath Allocasuarinas and tall shrubs. And it is this location that I have tried to portray in this painting of the male and female Common Bronzewings (Phaps chalcoptera). These birds are common around the urban area of Margaret River and surrounding bushland.

This was a three week project beginning with drawings, composition sketches and final painting.

The unframed original is now available directly from the Artist.

Dimensions 71cm wide and 51cm high

Price Framed $4250

Flame in the Snow: PAIR OF FLAME ROBINS ON A SNOW GUM

Flame Robins on the Snow Gum small _D8H6073We visited the Mount Buffalo and Falls Creek areas last September and were delighted to see so many Flame Robins. They seemed to find food in the snow which I guess could have been insects of some kind. One of the particular aims of the visit was to see the Snow Gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) which are truly one of the worlds most amazing trees. The branches have colourful longitudinal stripes like broad pin-stripes of pale yellows and grey/blue bark and the occasional green or red bark. The background view is from the Mt Buffalo area.

This is a watercolour painting on 300gsm Arches Hot Pressed (smooth) Paper. The original image measures approx. 35cm x 45cm high.

The Original can be obtained from the artist at this stage.

Framed price $1495.

Or, winging over a plain of water in the evening light swooping down and around to collect insects in their little open beaks.

The Princess is Preening: Princess Parrots on Marble Gum

Princess Parrot Preening small _D8H5485I remember that during our 11 + years in Alice Springs, whenever I got to travel west of Alice that I kept an eye out for Princess Parrots- I never got to see them in the wild. These beautiful birds with soft colour tones are a rarity for bird watchers mainly because they normally occur in the remote deserts of Western Australia (i.e. Great Victoria Desert, Gibson Desert and Great Sandy Desert).

It seems that their colours vary considerably in intensity from bird to bird.

This is a watercolour painting on 300gsm Arches Hot Pressed (smooth) Paper. The original image measures 70cm x 52cm wide.

The Original can be obtained from the artist at this stage.

Framed price $4250

Western Rosellas on Eucalyptus erythronema

Western Rosellas E erythronema smallI have a great love for these gentle little rosellas of Western Australia. We have 4 or 5 come to our garden fairly frequently and for us that is a bonus of living here in Margaret River.

I previously painted this species a few times before based upon the colours of the sub-species found in the SW corner of WA. I think this painting features some of the finest line/brush work I have so far undertaken: I certainly took my time with it.

(For those interested in the sub-species variations, this painting is based upon the inland birds or Platycercus icterotis xanthogenys as best as I could as there is very little reference material available to be conclusive in some aspects. The key difference with the more southern birds is found in the red margins on the upper back feathers. (The SW sub-species has more green margins.)

This is a watercolour painting on 300gsm Arches Hot Pressed (smooth) Paper. The original image measures 46cm x 37cm wide.

The Original was sold through Boranup Gallery. (It was displayed for just one week)

Recent Commissions for Australian Native Bird Art

Scarlet chested Parrots final 2 MR Watercolour (8)Visiting Aspects Gallery of Kings Park, Perth, as the resident artist for a few days in September had some unexpected spin-offs. While I met lots of new people and a few long term (but unknown) collectors of my paintings, I received a request for commission paintings. This commission including three paintings of Australian magpie and the cute WA legend- the Quokka.

Within a month of returning home I received yet another request and this time for three paintings of Australian parrots. The couple in this instance had fond memories of the smaller parrots from childhood as so took the opportunity to decorate their home in WA with paintings of the Western Rosellas and Scarlet-chested Parrots with two more paintings to come of Turquoise Parrots and Bourke’s Parrot.  Producing Australian Native Bird Art is a lot of fun and its very satisfying to meet other people who love these birds.

You can see the images of the Scarlet Chested Parrot and Western Rosella paintings here:
