LIMITED EDITION PRINTS

ALL LIMITED EDITION PRINTS are printed on the highest standard bright rag manufactured by Hahnemule Canson or Moab- leading paper makers in the World. The inks used are predicted to last about two hundred years and are therefore most unlikely to fade under interior lighting set ups. Each LEP is Signed by the Artist, Titled and Numbered. Most print runs are limited to 200 prints or less. The paper weight is at least 300gsm. In most cases no further print editions will be produced.

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF MAJESTIC MATES

Unlike most birds, the Black Cockatoo can be represented in various postures. The one I most like or admire is this one where the male bird throws out the frontal crest splays the feathers below the lower bill, and takes on the appearance of an Emperor. I nearly called the painting “The Emperor…”- but I didn’t! Each of my paintings is a unique composition and not based upon a single photograph. In this composition I have created three red eye catching forms or spaces- the males red tail, the females red tail and of course the red- flowers of the Corymbia. The curved body of the female also contributes, with those colour highlights , to hopefully causing the viewers eyes to travel around the painting and not stuck on any point. This factor gives a painting life and energy which is perhaps why the limited edition prints are very popular.

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF CARNABY’S RAIDERS

White-tailed Black Cockatoos are a relatively common sight in the south-west of Western Australia. This level of visibility is deceptive as the number of breeding birds steadily declines. The Marri is a most frequented source of food, i.e. the seed of the Honkey Nut. So I decided to represent these magnificent birds as a smallish flock feeding in a Marri with its twisted ropey branches and fascinatingly variable big leaves.

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF THE STORYTELLER

We have several Galahs visiting our garden and surrounding open land. The antics they get up to when relating to one another is often humorous and appears to be playful. But they also squabble and peck at one another in order to protect their space on a branch or to be near a mate- or so it seems.  While they are also known in WA as Pink and Greys, their colouring does vary with soft pinks through to deep or strong pink- particularly around the face- but not always. There is also often a dusky grey “wash” over the feathers on the abdomen. And even under the wings, there are some grey feathers tinged with pink.

This painting was designed to illustrate that fun behaviour of Galahs and while setting out the sketches it came to me that one bird was perched as if telling a story to the others. Thus the title of the painting.

About the painting- Splendid View of the Ridge

This is a most appealing fine art watercolour depicting these lovely birds in a natural local setting influenced by the bush along the northern side banks of the Margaret River. I was frequently painting small paintings of Splendid fairy Wrens and thought if I produce a nice LEP then I may be able to paint more pictures of other small birds. That was proved wrong. While this print has proven extremely popular there is still a steady demand for more Wren paintings. It’s a tough life hey.

The original painting sold in 2019 by the Artist.

ABOUT THE PAINTING- AFTERNOON REFLECTIONS

Our property consists of natural vegetation including Marri and Jarrah trees with a planted garden designed to attract birds. There are locations in the garden where Bronzewings tend to gather including a resting area underneath Allocasuarinas and tall shrubs. And it is this location that I have tried to portray in this painting of the male and female Common Bronzewings (Phaps chalcoptera). These birds are common around the urban area of Margaret River and surrounding bushland.

Completion of this painting was over three consecutive weeks: beginning with idea sketches, then detail drawings, followed by developing composition sketches and final watercolour painting.

The beautifully framed original is now available through Boranup Gallery.

HONKEY NUT HEAVEN- RED-CAPPED PARROTS ON A PINK FLOWERING MARRI

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF THE RED-CAPS

With colours to challenge a harlequin clown, the brilliant Red-capped Parrots are surprisingly not so easily found in a tree. In parts of the south-west corner of Western Australia, they are moderately common birds. Large flowering grevillea shrubs in gardens and Marri trees laden with the bell shaped fruit known locally as “Honkey Nuts  are where they are most frequently observed feeding. The female is similar to the male but has duller colouration. Either bird can vary in size from 32cm to 39cm long- which is quite a remarkable difference in length. Red-capped Parrots are endemic to the South-west corner of Western Australia.

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF THE REGENT BOWERBIRDS

On a recent hike up Mount Warning Northern NSW (August 2018), I came across this most fascinating branch growing immediately next to the track. I was about three quarters of the way up the climb. It appeared to me to be an old branch because of the amount of miscellaneous vegetation growing all over it. As soon as I saw it I knew that it was for: I wanted to paint the Regent Bowerbirds perched on it (with only a little licence) And here we have it.

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF THE EASTERN ROSELLLAS

This is a rather nostalgic painting: Eastern Rosellas have been a favourite bird from as long ago as my earliest years living in Central Victoria where Yellow Gums (Eucalyptus leucoxylon) grow naturally. I remember drawing a picture of them while at Primary School as an assignment or project for the Gould League of Bird Lovers. Dunolly Primary School and nearby bushland was covered in Yellow Gums- the cream flowering versions. It’s taken a bit under 60 years to repeat the effort but this time using watercolours and fancy paper. The background, while simple, is actually based on a view near Bright in NE Victoria.

ABOUT THE PAINTING OF THE PRINCESS PARROTS

I remember that during our 11 + years in Alice Springs, whenever I got to travel west of Alice that I kept an eye out for Princess Parrots- I never got to see them in the wild. These beautiful birds with soft colour tones are a rarity for bird watchers mainly because they normally occur in the remote deserts of Western Australia (i.e. Great Victoria Desert, Gibson Desert and Great Sandy Desert).

It seems that their colours vary considerably in intensity from bird to bird. The female bird (The Princess-Princess) was photographed at Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria in 2019. A very blurred and blocked image was the best I was able to obtain. But that’s the thing about painting, you can recover an image with a bit of drawing and knowledge of feathering. I really like the tree bit.

ABOUT THE PAINTING- HORNBILLS ARE INCREDIBLY STUNNING BIRDS

IT WAS JULY 2013 when we visited the Bali Bird Park for the first time and saw for the first time a pair of Wreathed Hornbills. I was totally enchanted by their appearance and wanted to paint their portrait – of course. But it took almost seven years before that happened. And now with the Covid 19 impact I decided to paint just what I have so long wanted too. And here we are: this is a watercolour of the female to the left and male to the right perched on the fascinating Ficus racemose (Cluster Fig). I also first saw this tree in Ubud where we stay in Bali. This is in fact the first non-Australian bird portrait that I have completed.

Wreathed Hornbills are classified as “Vulnerable” due to their apparent inability to adapt to the progressively destructive removal of their natural habitat.

about tHE PAINTING OF THE RED-COLLARED LORIKEETS

Red-collared Lorikeets pass under the radar unless you live in the north of Australia including the Kimberley Region of WA. The very common Rainbow Lorikeet from the east, south and Capital Cities of Australia is far more easily recognised. The eucalyptus is also a stunning feature of that region of Australia. The name Eucalyptus phoenicea is derived from the orange/red  flower filaments similar to the mythical Arabian bird known as Phoenix which is described as having brilliant scarlet coloured feathers. I found the flowers to be more orange than scarlet.

This is a watercolour painting on 300gsm Arches Hot Pressed (smooth) Paper. The original image measures 66cm x 50cm wide.

sharing the harvest: Baudins black cockatoos

“Sharing the Harvest” is a painting based on what we saw one day at a local winery: there were about 50 Baudin’s Black Cockatoos feeding on some white wine grapes. I decided to change the grapes to Purple type – a nice cabernet lets say so that they were prominent part of the picture. I have’nt often seen Cockatoos on vines.

This is a watercolour painting reproduced as Limited Edition Prints that are signed, numbered and Titled in pencil.

The dimensions of the print image are: 550mm x 370mm.
